workshop1ALTEC was contacted by a small technical college in central Missouri to provide professional development and integration strategies following the school's purchase of electronic whiteboards for each classroom. ALTEC organized a half-day, hands-on workshop for the school with a variety of options for each faculty member. Attendees were given the opportunity to participate in their choice of sessions including a basic introduction to the technology, intermediate level sessions with more detail about the boards, and higher level sessions focusing on integration strategies. Two professional development specialists from ALTEC led the workshop sessions on integration strategies, and ALTEC arranged for trainers from the whiteboard manufacturer to present the basic sessions. The college used money they received from the Perkins Act (Title II, Part A) to pay for the presenters as well as the associated travel costs.

workshop2ALTEC assisted a middle school in the Kansas City area over a period of a semester to facilitate the integration of their "One Computer Per Child" initiative. Over the preceding summer and at the beginning of the school year, ALTEC staffers worked closely with school administrators and faculty to perform a series of needs assessments to determine which teachers needed basic technical training (handled by the school and/or the computer sales company) and which were ready to integrate the student laptops into their day-to-day classroom activities. ALTEC designed a workshop to help the faculty use the new computers to support student-centered, project-based learning in every classroom. Following the workshop, an ALTEC staff member served as liaison with the school and was the point of contact for any teacher needing help using the computers in their lessons. Follow-up support was provided through a discussion board, live chat, and e-mail. Funding for these activities came from a variety of sources, including Federal Title I money as well as state formula funds through Title II, Part D (EETT).

workshop3As part of a district-wide inservice, ALTEC helped organize a multi-day mini-conference related to technology integration. Faculty members were allowed to choose from a variety of concurrent sessions in several themes. The conference included a combination of hands-on sessions, lectures, and roundtable discussion groups, and included sessions targeted towards administrators, media specialists, special education teachers, as well as individual content areas. Presenters were drawn from among ALTEC facilitators, district faculty, a local service center, and vendor representatives. School administrators worked with ALTEC to plan the curriculum, invite speakers, organize a vendor area, and design an assessment strategy. This workshop was paid for through a combination of attendance fees (from vendors and participants from outside the district) and Title II funds.

workshop4Teachers in an elementary school wanted to learn how to use a software package designed to help students create graphic organizers. They used some of their professional development budget to have an ALTEC staff member come to their school. ALTEC conducted a two-hour hands-on training onsite for 15 teachers, after which the participants were able to use the product in their classroom. No follow-up support was required.
